Follow these five easy tips to ensure that your personal items stay free from dirt, dust, mould and rust, and are ready for use when you need them.

Packing personal items can be a daunting task, whether you’re moving to a new home, going on a trip, or sending items to storage. However, with a little planning and organisation, you can pack your personal items safely and efficiently.

Here are some tips from our experts to help you pack personal items effectively.

If you don’t want to be faced with a messy, and very likely expensive, jumble of make-up, cosmetics, masks, shampoos, conditioners, body care products, razors, sponges, brushes, hair clips, sanitary items, and medications when you unpack, it’s well worth putting in a little time and effort to properly pack your personal items for transport and storage.

Fortunately, it’s as easy as following these five easy tips.

1. Make an inventory

Before you start packing, make a list of all the personal items you need to pack. This will help you stay organised and ensure that you don’t forget anything important.

Categorise your items by type, such as clothes, shoes, toiletries, electronics, and so on, and pack similar items together. This will make it easier to locate and unpack your items.

2. Choose the right containers

Choosing the right containers is crucial to ensure that your personal items are protected during transportation or storage.

Personal items are often fragile, contain electronic components, and/or susceptible to leakage. So it’s important to choose sturdy professional moving boxes and plastic containers that are appropriate for the type of items you’re packing. For example, use a box with built-in dividers for packing bottles or fragile items, and use waterproof, airtight containers and ziplock bags for toiletries.

3. Label Everything

Label all boxes and cases containing your personal items to ensure that you can easily find them later.

Labelling will also help you keep track of your items during transportation or storage. Be sure to list all the contents of each box on the box so you don’t have to open multiple boxes to find a single item.

If you’re moving, add a box number that corresponds with your overall moving inventory to each box, and add the room to which the box should be delivered. Future you will thank you for doing this on moving day.

PRO TIP: Since sticky labels tend to peel off in transit and/or storage, we recommend using permanent marker (wherever possible) to write the contents of each box or container directly onto the sides of the container, and include any special instructions, such as “Fragile” or “This Side Up”. If you must use adhesive labels, opt for professional moving labels rather than cheaper versions that may let you down.

4. Pack Strategically

When packing personal items, be sure to pack strategically to maximise space and minimise the risk of damage. Start with heavier items at the bottom of the box and lighter items on top.

Use packing materials, such as bubble wrap or packing paper, to fill empty spaces and prevent items from shifting during transportation.

Be sure not to overpack boxes as this can damage items. Also, heavy boxes are much harder to transport.

5. Use Professional Packing Materials

Using professional packing materials will help to protect your personal items from damage during transportation or storage. Unlike ordinary boxes, professional moving boxes won’t buckle and warp, allowing pests, dirt and mould to enter and putting fragile items at risk.

You can get everything you need, including bubble wrap and packing paper to wrap fragile items or fill empty spaces in boxes, and garment bags to keep clothes and shoes clean and organised, from our convenient on-site box shop.

Packing personal items doesn’t have to be stressful or difficult. With a little planning and organisation, you can pack your personal items safely and efficiently, ensuring that they will arrive at their destination in perfect condition.
