These six easy steps will help to keep your electronic goods safe and in good condition while in storage
In today’s digital age electronics are an essential part of our daily lives. From smartphones and laptops to cameras and gaming consoles, we rely on these devices for work, entertainment and communication.
However, storing electronics can be a challenge, as they are sensitive to environmental factors such as temperature changes, humidity and dust.
Follow these six simple steps to ensure your electronics are stored properly
Proper storage of electronics is essential to keep them in good condition and extend their lifespan. By following these simple tips, you can help to protect your devices from damage and ensure that they are ready to use when you need them.
1. Choose the right storage location
Particularly in flood-prone areas like Emerald, it’s vital to select the right storage location for your electronic goods.
Avoid areas that are prone to moisture and temperature fluctuations, such as garages, garden sheds or the space beneath the house. These areas can expose devices to heat, humidity, rainwater, pests, dust and dirt, which can damage and destroy your electronics.
Instead, choose a cool, dry, and dark location, such as one of our brand new pest- and weather-resistant self storage units, conveniently located in a prime flood-free area in Emerald, where your devices will be protected against exposure to the elements.
2. Clean your devices prior to packing
Before storing electronics, it’s essential to clean them thoroughly. Any grime left on the device can damage the delicate components inside, and it can also attract pests. Use a soft cloth to carefully wipe down each device, and be sure to remove all dust or debris from surfaces, ports and buttons.
3. Use protective cases or covers
Where possible, pack devices into their original protective boxes and/or covers to help to prevent damage to your electronics during storage. These boxes are specifically designed to to protect the item against dust, scratches and impact damage.
If you no longer have the original packaging, it’s well worth investing in appropriate packing cases to protect your electronics. For example, use laptop bags to store and transport laptops and padded sleeves to protect and store smaller items such as phones and tablets.
PRO TIP: Be sure to add a few sachets of desiccant to each packing case or bag to keep the contents dry during storage. Check on these at regular intervals and replace them as required during long term storage.
4. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions
Be mindful of manufacturer instructions when it comes to packaging and transporting electronics. For example, big screen televisions are especially susceptible to screen cracks and should be stored and handled in the upright position.
5.Store batteries separately
If you’re storing devices that use batteries, be sure to remove the batteries before storing them. Batteries can leak acid over time, which can damage the devices. Store the batteries in a separate container or bag and be sure to keep them away from children or pets.
6.Keep track of accessories and cords
Be sure to keep track of all accessories and cords that go with your electronics. Store them in a labelled Ziplock bag and tape them securely to the back of the device or to the inside of the container with the matching device, so that you can easily find them when you need them. This will also prevent cords from becoming tangled or damaged during storage.
A little care and attention during packing will go a long way towards keeping your electronics safe and secure during storage and transit.
